Fall is here and Winter will be following soon, the days are getting shorter every day. This is a very critical period for Elderly people that live alone in their homes. There is a high risk of falling that can cause serious injuries. Some people also exhibit a state of confusion and anxiety during these times, which is termed as “Sundown Syndrome”. The anxiety can be caused by the inability to not see as well in the dark.
All these issues add up and make it very difficult staying home alone. After falling, elderly people may fear falling again, mobility is sometimes reduced because confidence is lost. Some people because of this fear decrease their activity resulting into joint stiffness and weakness, further reducing mobility.
Many falls do not result in injuries, a large percentage of non-injured fallers cannot get up without assistance. Getting help after an immobilizing fall improves the chance of survival and increases the likelihood of a return to independent living.
You need to enjoy the upcoming holidays and have a good festive season.
